The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that shed heat to the outside air. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet stands in a utility closet, basement, or attic and holds the evaporator coil, which does the cooling work on the air before it moves through the home.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the indoor cabinet, carrying refrigerant between the two. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor cabinet to a floor drain or outside, clearing the moisture the evaporator coil pulls from the air.
